One Desert Sky

2014. Stainless steel, aluminum, polyurethane

High Desert Regional Health Center, Lancaster, CA.

Commissioned by the County of Los Angeles Department of Culture, this 280 foot kinetic installation is a portrait of the imagination of the people of The Antelope Valley, CA. I interviewed 300 people and presented them with a questionnaire to which they told me things like; “How would you describe your home to people from another country?”; “If you could start over what would you like to be when you grow up?”; “What is buried in the landfills of the valley?”; “What aspect of nature do you most enjoy?” etc. From each answer an icon was designed to represent the answer and a selection of 400 icons were cut, each 10 times in aluminum, in varying scales. In a random fashion, the icons where suspended in a kinetic construction, so that each icon would move gently. With a large mezzanine encircling the entire installation, the viewer can lean close to the pieces and search for the icons that represent their answers.  There is a visual game to be played as well, following the general rules of the Surrealist exquisite corpse. This installation therefore is an interactive public art piece.
